Joseph David, CEO and Registered Manager of Crossroads Barnsley, talks to us about the value of Skills for Care registered manager networks.
When I reflect on my journey in the social care sector, I can’t help but think about how far I’ve come and the essential support I’ve received along the way. I moved to the United Kingdom in 2002, bringing with me experience from my time in the Singapore Armed Forces. My military background provided me with leadership ability, discipline, and crisis management skills that would serve as the foundation for my career in social care.
My care career began at Stocksbridge Neuro Rehabilitation Centre, where I gained experience in dementia care, mental health support, and medication administration. I took on leadership roles early, mentoring teams and ensuring that we adhered to regulations while continually improving our service. This experience shaped my approach to care, motivating me to pursue further qualifications and training. In 2005, I was offered an opportunity to join Crossroads Care, a provider focused on ‘caring for carers,’ where I have now been employed for over 20 years. Over the course of my career, I have risen through the ranks, from a care support worker to team supervisor, and ultimately became the service leader and CEO.
While my journey has been incredibly rewarding, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges along the way. This is where the support of Skills for Care’s registered manager networks has been so helpful. It ensures a secure environment for people to build connections with their peers, exchange best practices, and obtain assurance that they are not alone in the obstacles they encounter. The networks promote collaboration, provide access to expert guidance, and keep us informed of sector developments.
For me, the ability to engage with other managers has been one of the most significant advantages. Through these interactions, I’ve gained insights into solving problems I might have overlooked and been introduced to new opportunities that I wouldn't have otherwise known about. One such opportunity came through the guidance of Zoe Thomas, locality manager at Skills for Care. She helped me overcome a particular obstacle I was facing by making me aware of new funding opportunities that have been crucial in supporting my work.
We recently received recognition at the Proud of Barnsley Awards. Being nominated for this prestigious award highlights what can be achieved with hard work and the support of a great team and the broader care community. It also serves as a reminder that we, as registered managers, are part of something much bigger than ourselves. The care we provide has the power to change lives, and that’s something to be proud of.
The support I’ve received from Skills for Care and the registered manager network has been instrumental in my journey as a registered manager. The resources, guidance, and support offered by this network has made a world of difference in helping me become a better service leader. If you’re a registered manager feeling isolated or overwhelmed, I encourage you to connect with your local network and take advantage of the support that’s available to you.
